Toyota AYGO Dashboard Warning Lights
The AYGO has been manufactured by Toyota since 2005 with the second and current model generation being released in 2014. Here we cover the Toyota AYGO dashboard warning lights for both the first generation (Mk 1) and the second generation (Mk 2). Unless otherwise stated, the warning light description applies to both generations.
The dashboard layout and warning light location will vary depending on the model version and the year of manufacture of your AYGO. Note; several warning lights illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should go out shortly after the engine has started. This is part of the self-check system and is normal.

 | The Toyota AYGO battery warning light illuminates in red. If it comes on when driving, there's a problem with the charging system. If the battery is not being charged, there is a limited amount of time before the engine will shut down. Immediately switch off any non-essential vehicle systems that are consuming electric and find a safe place to park up and stop. Call a Toyota approved workshop for assistance. |
 | The Toyota AYGO brake warning light illuminates in red. If it comes on when driving, it indicates two possibilities: 1. Low brake fluid level. Brake fluid levels can fall over time as brake pads wear. If there's a sudden drop in brake fluid level, it may indicate a leak in the system. This will severely reduce braking performance. 2. Brake system malfunction. A malfunction has occurred in the vehicle's brake system. Warning It's advised to not continue driving if the brake warning light comes on as it may be dangerous. Stop in a safe place and contact a Toyota workshop. Note On the Mk1 version of the Toyota AYGO, this warning light also illuminates when the hand brake is on. |
 | Engine oil is used to lubricate the internal components of the engine. If the Toyota AYGO low engine oil pressure warning light comes on, it means that the oil may not have sufficient pressure to lubricate all components. The red 'STOP' light may also illuminate. This in turn results in an increase in friction (metal-on-metal) that may lead to engine seizure. Warning To prevent engine damage, it's advised to stop the car safely, but as quickly as possible in a safe place and contact a Toyota workshop. It's unlikely you'll be able to continue your journey. |
 | This warning light means your Toyota AYGO engine coolant is overheating. If the engine coolant becomes too hot, severe damage may occur. Depending on your engine version, the coolant light will flash, then stay on, or just stay on. The red 'STOP' light may also illuminate. A loss of engine power may also be experienced (for example, the speed of the vehicle does not increase). You may also notice steam coming from under the bonnet / hood. To help prevent damage, follow this procedure: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and switch off the engine. 2. If there is no steam, open the bonnet / hood. If there is steam, wait for it to subside before lifting the bonnet / hood. 3. Wait several minutes for the engine to cool, then inspect the hoses and radiator for any leaks. If there are leaks, do not continue to drive and contact a Toyota workshop. 4. If no leaks are occurring, check engine coolant level is between the MIN and MAX marker on the tank and add coolant if required. You can use normal water in an emergency. If the coolant levels are satisfactory and do not require topping up, there may be a fault with the cooling system. Contact a repair shop before continuing. 5. After topping up with coolant, start the engine and switch on the air conditioning system. This will operate the radiator fan - check it is working (you can hear it) and check again for any leaks. 6. If the fan is not operating, immediately switch off the engine and contact a repair workshop. 7. If the fan is working and there are no leaks, you can continue your journey. Check to ensure the warning light goes out and have your vehicle inspected soon. |
 | The Toyota AYGO STOP warning light illuminates due to a malfunction in: • Engine oil pressure (too low) • Engine coolant temperature (too high) If the red STOP warning light illuminates, taking traffic conditions into account, stop the vehicle, switch off the engine and contact a Toyota workshop. |
 | The cog and exclamation mark symbol is the Toyota AYGO transmission fault warning light and relates to the multi-mode manual transmission. The light illuminates constantly or flashes: Constantly: A fault has occurred with the multi-mode manual transmission system. Have it checked by a Toyota workshop as soon as possible. Constantly with audible warning: A fault has occurred with the multi-mode manual transmission system and the clutch is overheating due to excess load. Stop as soon as possible, select N on the gear-shift lever and wait 15 minutes for the clutch to cool. Have system checked by a Toyota workshop as soon as possible. Flashing with audible warning: Indicates an overheated clutch but does not indicate a fault in the multi-mode manual transmission system. Stop as soon as possible, select N on the gear-shift lever and wait 15 minutes for the clutch to cool. |
 | The Toyota AYGO check engine warning light or 'malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) indicates a malfunction in: • The electronic engine control system • The electronic throttle control system • The emission control system • The electronic multi-mode manual transmission control system (if equipped) If the check engine warning light illuminates, due to the many possible faults, diagnostic equipment is required to read fault codes. Usual faults related to the check engine light are: • Bad oxygen sensor • Catalytic converter issues • Mass airflow sensor • Spark plug / engine misfiring If you notice the engine running 'rough', it could be a sign of misfiring which has the potential to damage the engine and catalytic converter. |
 | The Toyota AYGO airbag / SRS warning light should come on for a short time with the ignition and should go out when the engine starts. If the airbag warning light does not come on at all or stays on constantly, there;s a fault with the: • The SRS airbag system; or • The seat belt pretensioner system System connections and cables are located under the front passenger seats. Ensure connections are in place and that the area is free from obstructions. |
 | The Toyota AYGO ABS warning light staying on constantly indicates a fault with: • The ABS; or • The brake assist system ABS, or Anti-lock Braking system is an added safety system to normal brakes. Essentially the system prevents wheel lock under emergency braking, therefore allowing the driver to steer. The failure of the ABS system is often due to the sensor and normal brake will continue to work even with an ABS fault. The brake assist system applies greater brake force in emergency braking situations. It helps to reduce stopping distances and combines with ABS. You can continue to drive with an ABS fault light on, but without the benefit of these safety features. Have the system serviced as soon as possible. |
 | The Toyota AYGO power steering warning light Indicates a malfunction in the EPS (Electric Power Steering) system. A audible warning may also sound. This isn't often a dangerous fault, though you may notice that greater effort is required to turn the steering wheel, particularly at slow speeds. Note On the Mk1 version of the Toyota AYGO, the power steering warning light displays as:  |
 | The Toyota AYGO Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS) uses radar to scan the road ahead and if the system detects a crash, an alert will sound. The system uses brake assist to help reduce or avoid impact. Flashes: The PCS warning light flashes along with an audible sound to alert that the system has malfunctioned. Illuminates constantly: The PCS warning light illuminates to indicate that they system is temporarily unavailable. This could be due to: • the windscreen (where the radar is based) is dirty or fogged up. Ensure the windscreen is clear and clean and that it's clear from ice and stickers. • The radar sensor temperature is too hot to operate. This could be due to being parked directly under the sun for example. Wait for the sensor to cool. |

 | The Toyota AYGO automatic engine stop / start warning light flashes in yellow to indicate a fault in the stop and start system. |
 | Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is a combination of stability systems such as traction control (TRC) and hill-start assist. The Toyota AYGO VSC warning light illuminates constantly or flashes. Illuminates constantly: A fault has been detected with the VSC, TRC or hill-start assist. Other systems such as ABS may be affected as they share the same sensors. You can continue to drive the vehicle without the stability feature of VSC, but have the system serviced as soon as possible. Flashes: When VSC, TRC or hill-start assist is operating, the light flashes. Traction Control Part of the Vehicle Stability Control system is traction control (TRC). This helps to prevent wheel spin and is often beneficial in pulling away quickly such as out of a junction for example. There are occasions where it's beneficial to turn off traction control, such as when being stuck in snow. To turn the TRC system off, press and release the VSC button. The TRC OFF warning light will illuminate on the dashboard panel. Press the button again to turn the system back on.  | Lane Departure Assist (LDA) uses a camera sensor located on the front windscreen that recognises lane markings. When the system detects that the vehicle has deviated from the lane without indicating, the driver receives an alert. The Toyota AYGO LDA warning light illuminates in yellow   |
 | The Toyota AYGO smart entry warning light flashes for 15 seconds along with an audible alert indicating a fault with the system.  | The Toyota AYGO low fuel warning light illuminates along wit an audible alert when the remaining fuel in the tank is approximately 5.25 L (1.4 gal., 1.1 Imp.gal.) or less. Refuel as soon as possible. |
 | The Toyota AYGO tyre pressure warning light illuminates in yellow constantly or flashes: Illuminates constantly: This warns the driver that one or more tyres has a significant loss of pressure. Stop safely but quickly and inspect all four vehicle tyres. Inflate the affected tyre or replace the wheel. After adjusting tyre pressures or changing the wheel, the Toyota AYGO tyre pressure system needs resetting. Flashing: If the tyre pressure warning light flashes for around one minute then stays on constantly, it warns of a fault in the tyre pressure monitoring system. The system uses ABS sensors to detect pressures. If there's a fault with the ABS system, the tyre monitor may fail to operate. Toyota AYGO tyre pressure reset To reset the Toyota AYGO tyre pressure system, follow this procedure: 1. Resetting the tyre pressure system cannot be done while the vehicle is moving. Park the vehicle and switch off the engine to the 'LOCK' position. 2. Adjust tyre pressure to the correct values. The correct pressure values can be found on the tyre pressure label located inside the driver's door. 3. Ideally tyre pressures need to be adjusted and stored in the system when tyres are cold. 4. After adjusting pressures, turn the ignition switch to 'ON' or IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with a smart entry & start system). 5. Press and hold the tyre pressure warning reset button (located in the glove compartment) until the tyre pressure warning light flashes slowly three times. 6. The tyre pressure system has now been reset and will use the new pressures as reference values.  |

Hi , Why does 2010 Toyota Aygo Semi-Automatic lose the gears while driving for no apparent reason…When I switch off for about 5 minutes it goes alright and stays in gear then completely out of the blue it does it again…It’s got to the point where it’s too dangerous too drive but no one seems to know the answer to the problem…John.

Hi can some one please help me! I have a 2014 Toyota Argo semi automatic and had a full service and MOT done last month just been out for a drive and the type pressure and the Slip indicator and trac came on the dashboard and stayed on ? Just asking if this is something that should of been checked on service or MOT

If your version of Aygo uses indirect TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), it means that it uses ABS wheel speed sensors to determine tyre pressure rather than pressure sensors located in each tyre. ABS wheel speed sensors are prone to damage / failure and will effect the operation of TPMS, traction control ESC etc. There are four of them, one at each wheel. A diagnostic scanner is the way forward. It’ll scan for fault codes and let you know where the problem is. If it faulty wheel speed sensor, the diagnostic tool will tell you which one. Pretty much all mechanics have these diagnostic tools.

I suddenly got the engine malfunction light. A flashing tyre pressure light and a stable slip control light ( that wont go off). All appeared at the same time the engine lost power. Lasted a couple if days then everything back to nornal for a day then lights and rough running/power loss returned. Any ideas folks?
