Reasons Why the Toyota Highlander Tire Pressure Light Is On

A common reason why the Toyota Highlander’s tire pressure warning light remains on is due to damage to the sensor after a tire change. The Toyota Highlander uses the ‘direct’ method of electronic tire pressure monitoring, which means a battery-powered sensor is integrated into the valve of each tire to measure pressure.

If a sensor is damaged or not fitted during the tire change, the tire pressure light will initially flash for around 1 minute, then remain on. Similarly, each sensor has a battery with a lifespan of around 10 years. If the battery expires, the warning light will remain lit and the entire sensor will require replacement. Other reasons that can cause the tire pressure light to remain on include:

  • Non-genuine Toyota wheels have been fitted
  • A tire has been fitted that is not in accordance with Toyota’s recommendations
  • A tire has been fitted that is not of a specified size
  • The vehicle is fitted with tire chains
  • An auxiliary-supported run-flat tire is equipped
  • If there’s a build-up of ice or snow around the wheels or wheel housing
  • If wheel without the tire pressure sensor is used.
